The small intestine can become abnormally "leaky" and more porous, allowing abnormally big food molecules to reach the bloodstream. These partially digested molecules may trigger allergic or autoimmune reactions in the intestinal wall as well as other parts of the body. Symptoms can appear practically anywhere, including the skin (hives or eczema), joints (arthritis), lungs (asthma), and the digestive system.
When the small intestine's permeability is compromised, it absorbs what it should not and does not absorb what it should. Vitamin B-12 and the fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) have a difficult time passing through the leaky gut, leaving the individual deficient in these essential nutrients.
Only proteins that have been broken down into single amino acids or tiny molecules of two or three amino acids (dipeptides, tripeptides) are absorbed by a healthy intestinal tract. The small intestine is also the first line of protection in our immune system. It not only keeps harmful microorganisms and toxic substances out of the bloodstream, but it also makes an antibody (secretory IgA) that neutralizes intruders and prevents them from sticking to membranes.
A leaky gut allows bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites to enter the circulation as well as large protein molecules. When this occurs, the body responds with alarm. The immune system creates antibodies against these "foreign" substances. Many other allergic and autoimmune reactions could occur. Chronic fatigue is a common symptom of a body always fighting a constant threat. Almost every meal causes systemic stress in a leaky gut syndrome body.
Gluten intolerance (celiac disease), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs), alcohol, intestinal parasites, food sensitivities, candidiasis, or repeatedly overloading a sluggish digestive system with far more food than it can handle may all result in a leaky gut. To allow the intestinal wall to heal itself, all relevant variables must be identified and eliminated.
The longer the body is under assault in this manner, the less capable it is of producing the antibodies and hormones required for regular functioning.
The small intestine's surface microvilli are extremely regenerative. Individual microvilli can heal themselves in four to five days if they are given complete rest from everything that irritates them. Healing will take much longer if the injury is substantial, such as deep tears in the intestinal wall. And total healing is required for the body's overall health and wellness to be restored.
Large protein molecules should be avoided since a leaky gut cannot process them. Starches and disaccharide sugars (sucrose and lactose) should also be avoided since a weakened intestinal wall is unable to produce the necessary enzymes required to break them down. Starches and sugars that have not been completely digested remain in the gut, fermenting and feeding pathogenic bacteria, candida, and other organisms that continue to attack the intestinal wall. It is also vital to avoid any meals to which a person is allergic. Continuing to consume these foods stresses the intestinal lining.
